What Is Dengue Fever?

The risk of contracting dengue fever increases during and after heavy rainfall, as this is when mosquito populations tend to be highest.

There is no specific treatment for dengue fever, and most people recover without any specific medical treatment. However, severe cases may require hospitalization to manage symptoms and prevent complications. 

The best way to prevent dengue fever is to protect yourself from mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and staying indoors during peak mosquito hours (dawn and dusk).

What Are The Symptoms Of Dengue Fever?

The symptoms of dengue fever can vary in severity and can range from mild to severe. The most common symptoms include:

  • High fever: This is typically the first symptom of dengue fever and can last for 2 to 7 days.
  • Headache: This can be a severe headache, often located behind the eyes.
  • Muscle and joint pain: This can feel like a severe flu and can affect the bones, muscles, and joints.
  • Nausea and vomiting: Some people may experience nausea and vomiting.
  • Rash: A rash may appear on the trunk and limbs, which can be itchy.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Fatigue.
  • Mild bleeding: Some people may experience mild bleeding from the nose or gums, or small red or purple spots on the skin (petechiae).

Symptoms typically begin 4 to 7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and usually last for 2 to 7 days. In some cases, symptoms may not appear for up to 2 weeks after infection.

It's important to note that not all people infected with the dengue virus will develop symptoms, and some may have very mild symptoms. However, in severe cases, dengue fever can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome which can be fatal if not treated promptly.

What Are The Causes Of Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is caused by a virus called dengue virus (DENV) which is a member of the Flavivirus genus and is closely related to other viruses such as yellow fever and Zika. 

The virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. The Aedes mosquito is a day-biting mosquito that breeds in stagnant water and is found mainly in urban and semi-urban areas.

The mosquitoes become infected when they feed on the blood of a person who is already infected with the dengue virus. Once an infected mosquito has bitten a person, the virus enters the person's bloodstream and begins to replicate, leading to the development of symptoms.

The virus is mainly found in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, such as Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean, Central, and South America, and Africa. The risk of contracting dengue fever increases during and after heavy rainfall, as this is when mosquito populations tend to be highest.

In addition, dengue fever can also be spread through blood transfusions, organ transplants, and from mother to baby during childbirth, but these are considered rare methods of transmission.
